BAFTA TV Craft Awards: The Stylish Ladies - A Hand Tailored Suit

BAFTA TV Craft Awards: The Stylish Ladies

With the BAFTA TV Awards taking place in just over a week's time (Sunday 8th May 2022), this weekend was the chance to honour and award those at the 23rd Annual British Academy Television Craft Awards. Such categories the nominees are in vary from costume design, editing, sound and more. As the awards took place this Sunday (24th April) at The Brewery in London, the red carpet was rolled out and of course, we spotted some chic suits from the ladies who attended.

Television writer and director Nida Manzoor was honoured with the BAFTA for Writer: Comedy for the series, "We Are Lady Parts", and was almost nominated for Emerging Talent: Fiction with the same show. Her suit was a power suit for sure at the event, sporting a violet two-piece attire with a white shirt and black tie. The cut of the jacket had a rather vintage and classic look about it with a boxy finish across the shoulders, the notch lapels rather wide on the front and the trousers themselves made with a high rise. There was just one button on the front of the jacket, along with a thin welt pocket and two flapped pockets. Pleats fell from the trousers waist to create extra fullness before being tapered down to the hem that finishes on the ankles.

Actress Olivia Colman looked chic in an all-black tailored ensemble, consisting of a shawl lapel jacket, tapered trousers and a black pussybow blouse underneath. The jacket was quite elegant in its finish thanks to the smooth lapel front and hidden fastening on the centre front. The shoulders were padded and quite rounded for a statement detail, yet soft in its appearance through the subtle shine of the cloth. The trousers were matte in appearance to ensure the satin side stripes were noticed and rather defined through the sharp centre creases.

Writer and creator was also a winner at this year's BAFTA TV Craft Awards, taking home the award in the category Writer: Drama for the show, "In My Skin". Her attire for the evening was a double-breasted two-piece suit constructed from Black Watch tartan. The peak lapels are finished with a small curved point that almost seamlessly blends into the rest of the jacket, as to do the six fabric covered buttons on the front. The same fabric buttons are featured in four-button arrangements on the cuffs, whilst two flapped pockets align up with the direction of the tartan print. The white shirt is made with a covered button placket for a smooth finish, situated underneath the grandad collar and tucked into the trouser waist. The trousers themselves are complete with a centre crease and finish just above her white trainers.

Actress Nathalie Emmanuel's suit was quite minimal and elegant, opting for a deep green two-piece suit and a black V-neck top underneath. Simple and sophisticated was what this look epitomised, with both of the jacket's large green buttons fastened in the centre and the sleeves pushed up to create a 3/4 length. Notch lapels were the style of choice for this casual look with soft padding in the shoulders and thin single jet pockets just below the waist. The trousers were wide in silhouette and loose to really enhance the relaxed style of the red carpet attire, the centre crease still noticeable and the hem falling to what would be floor-length if styled with flatter shoes.

Actress Selina Griffiths kept it simple too on the red carpet as she wore a black Nehru tailored jacket with light grey horn buttons down the centre and a thin double jet pocket on the chest, positioned on a slight angle. The shoulder lines are dropped for a more relaxed feel as the sleeves gather into the tall cuffs. The cuffs themselves are created with a three-button arrangement, the buttons quite spaced apart. As the back of the jacket is cut with splits on the side, the trousers are presented with a flat front in the straight leg-style, the hem sitting over the red shoes which add that pop of colour to the attire.

Costumer designer and stylist PC Williams was honoured with the BAFTA for Costume Design for her costumes worn in the series, "We Are Lady Parts". On the red carpet and for the awards ceremony, she stunned in a vibrant and colourful ensemble which included pleated trousers and a matching coat. The coat wrapped around the centre and was tied off to fastened it, with the edges finished in black binding. The shoulder lines are very low down on the arms, fitting well with the flared silhouette of them as they finish just above the wrist. Sections of the colourful stripes are joined together and angled in different directions to give extra movement whilst the trousers are made with all vertical stripes, all of these working together to created an elongated silhouette. The trousers are slightly flared at the hem for a bootcut style and do not cover the light green shoes.
