The BRIT Awards 2021: Gentlemen of the Red Carpet - A Hand Tailored Suit

The BRIT Awards 2021: Gentlemen of the Red Carpet

The BRIT Awards is the time of the award season where British and international music artists are celebrated with awards for any singles or albums they have released during the last year. They are the British Phonographic Industry's most popular music awards, hosted annually in February each year; but as most award ceremonies this year, it was pushed back to a later date. Tuesday 11th May 2021 saw The BRITs commence at the O2 Arena in London, and was host to 4000 key workers who had tickets to attend, a wonderful gesture and considered to be the first live musical show in the U.K. since the pandemic hit. The winners also received two awards: one BRIT for themselves and a smaller silver model which they could award to someone they felt deserved it, as designed by artists Es Devlin and Yinka Ilori.

It was great to see an element of normality once again and of course, with any award season, the red carpet was rolled out for some of the most famous musicians who were able to attend: and at A Hand Tailored Suit, we've selected some of our favourite looks from the gentlemen of the red carpet, starting with the host:

Jack Whitehall

Comedian and actor Jack Whitehall was the host of the 41st BRIT awards and for majority of the night, wore a double-breasted Joshua Kane bespoke evening suit with contrasting black peak lapels. The burgundy creation sported a small polka dot design as the jacket was created with a 6-button front, waist-high flapped pockets and 4-button cuffs on the sleeve. Whitehall's matching trousers were tapered down to the ankle as the hem just touches the top of his shoes, with the sharp centre crease emphasising the natural sheen of the suit's material. Wearing a white dress shirt with white fabric-covered buttons and the all essential black bow tie, it was a dapper opening to the awards from Jack Whitehall.

MNEK

British recording artist and singer MNEK attended the BRITs in an ice blue ensemble from Robert Wun, as the singer featured on Joel Corry's BRIT-nominated track for British Single with Mastercard, 'Head & Heart'. If the colour of MNEK's outfit wasn't sharp enough, the overall impact was as it included a tailored jacket with a single button fastening, curved hemline, openings in the sleeves and padded shoulders. As styled underneath the jacket, a gorgeous draped pleated panel leads attention to the long, pleated trousers with a wide hemline. Pleated cuffs are defined thanks to the sleeve openings on the jacket as the shirt itself includes a pleated collar that hangs beautifully and symmetrically over the top. As the light hits the material, the shine is simply stunning, and it was an iconic fashion moment for MNEK.

Olly Alexander (Years & Years)

Olly Alexander from Years & Years attended this year's BRIT awards in a starry-print two-piece tailored suit from Gucci, as he would later perform with Sir Elton John on the main stage during the night. Alexander's white suit with black stars was outlined in black also on the hem of the jacket and round the shawl collar to really define the bold design. As the jacket is lined with white on the inside, a light blue shirt featuring a tall collar was also defined with its black and silver details, with the black feather trim covering the lower half of the sleeves. It truly was a modern piece of tailoring made unique on the red carpet by Olly Alexander.

Headie One

British rapper Headie One was nominated for Male Solo Artist and British Single with Mastercard with his track 'Ain't It Different' whilst also featuring on nominated track 'Don't Rush' by Young T & Bugsey. On the night, Headie One sported a Louis Vuitton tailored grey coat with the signature designer's logos printed in silver. With small elements of red and blue also spotted in the colour scheme of the attire, the coat itself included short notch lapels and pattern-matched flapped pockets and welt pocket on the chest as an extra smart detail. With a darker plain grey lining inside, the rapper wore it over a black roll neck and black sharp crease trousers. Paired with his metallic embroidery and very smart casual shoes, Headie One looked just ever so cool and casual on the red carpet.

Rappers and hip-hop duo, Young T and Bugsey, rocked up on the BRIT Awards red carpet looking very fresh as they both wore two-piece black suits from Dolce & Gabbana. Nominated for British Group, Breakthrough Artist and British Single with Mastercard with their track 'Don't Rush', Young T opted for a double-breasted suit with grey pinstripe design as the three pockets on the front are perfectly pattern-matched. The 4-button design included the wide peak lapels which balance out the suit's cut as the straight leg trousers finish on the top of his smart black shoes just nicely. Bugse's two-piece dinner suit was a single-breasted silhouette with two buttons for the fastening, leaving the bottom one open. Adding a bit of glam to his suit was the contrasting embellished peak lapels and collar, captivating the glamour commonly seen with award ceremonies. With a subtle centre crease on the trousers, Bugsey wore a white dress shirt with black studs and thin bow tie as Young T selected a black shirt and black tie. Both their suits were different but as Young T & Bugsey do, they work so well together.

Sir Elton John

Sir Elton John performed with Years & Years during the main ceremony and looked smart doing so wearing a two-piece navy blue Gucci tuxedo with wide peak lapels. As the lapels and collar were outlined in black to define this classic tailored feature, the traditional black satin stripe also featured on the trousers for an extra classic finish. The two-button jacket was worn over the top of a crisp evening shirt with fabric-covered buttons, top button fastened and exposed with a lovely ruffle detail on the cuff that perfectly sticks out at the end of the jacket's sleeves. For the evening occasion, it was a lovely choice of attire for Sir Elton John.

S1MBA

British singer S1mba turned up looking dapper in a BOSS suit as his track 'Rover' was nominated for British Single with Mastercard. The two-piece blue ensemble worn with a black roll neck and silver chains was accessorised with a darker blue and white polka dot pocket square for an extra sartorial finish. The jacket itself is a 2-button fastening with matching black buttons on the jacket's cuffs and the standard flapped pockets on the front. With a centre crease on the trousers that just brush the singer's black loafers with gold detailing, the double vent on the jacket makes the smart suit a little bit more casual; yet it doesn't affect the smart and clean finish of S1MBA's overall suiting attire.

Harry Styles

Winner of the British Single with Mastercard with his track 'Watermelon Sugar', British singer Harry Styles continued to deliver with another inspired suit from Gucci. The brown-toned double-breasted suit was designed with padded shoulders as emphasised by the wide peak lapels and wide-leg trousers with the centre crease almost covering the singer's shoes. On the jacket itself was a 6-button fastening with pattern-matching flapped pockets that worked well with the large geometric print of the suit. On the jacket cuffs was a 5-button arrangement in a dark brown with darker embroidered buttonholes to ensure its noticeable placement against the cream part of the suit. With his cream shirt worn open collar and accessorised with a brown leather bag, it was a vintage yet modern finish for Harry Styles' suit of the evening.
