The Gentlemen of the 2022 Met Gala: Our Top 10 Looks - A Hand Tailored Suit

The Gentlemen of the 2022 Met Gala: Our Top 10 Looks

2nd May 2022 was the first Monday in May and the return of the annual - and highly extravagant - fashion event of the year: The Met Gala. Hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, many celebrities and designers took to the red carpet dressed in their interpretation of an assigned theme which this year, was the second half of a two-part instalment. (If you want to be reminded of the first part and last year's gala, check our blog here!) "In America: An Anthology of Fashion" saw the dress code of "white tie" and "gilded glamour", epitomising the gilded era of New York towards the latter part of the 19th century. The red carpet delivered ensembles that were certainly eye-catching, so here our are top 10 looks from the gentlemen of the 2022 Met Gala.

Actor Ryan Reynolds was in attendance with his wife Blake Lively who together, were co-chairs at this year's Met Gala. Pictured on the red carpet together, Ryan sported a dark brown velvet Ralph Lauren tuxedo which he styled with a white waistcoat and formal evening shirt. The jacket was of a single-breasted cut with rounded peak lapels and two double jet pockets either side near the bottom. The centre front edge curved smoothly into the hem, matching the flat front of the tapered trousers. Accompanying his low-scooped waistcoat and shirt were a matching white bow tie and pocket square folded in the welt pocket, styling a small white boutonnière on his lapel and a silver pocket watch for that subtle luxurious touch.

Also sporting Ralph Lauren on the Met Gala red carpet was singer Jon Batiste, keeping it quite sophisticated for the evening in a black velvet dinner jacket, paired with sleek black trousers and a low-scooped black waistcoat underneath. The dinner jacket has a contrasting shawl collar - the same cloth as the trousers - whilst edged in a decorative trim. Thin double jet pockets also featured either side of the fancy centre frog fastening. Gauntlet cuffs were the preferred choice on this attire as the white shirt cuffs were exposed. The shirt itself included a classic collar and black dress studs down the centre, finishing off with a classic black bow tie and white pocket square in the welt pocket.

Actor Jared Leto's ensemble was a statement Gucci number comprised of a double-breasted ivory jacket and matching trousers which both he and Gucci's creative director, Alessandro Michele, wore. The glamour was subtle thanks to the golden and pearlescent floral embroidery seen throughout the attire, an elegant detail starkly contrasted through the boldness of the black peak lapels and buttons on the front and cuffs. Flapped pockets were positioned near the bottom whilst on the trousers was worn a black cummerbund for the evening. A plain white shirt was worn underneath, whilst the satin red bow tie added another bold pop of colour.

Evan Mock

Model and actor Evan Mock definitely paid homage to the theme at this year's gala as he donned a corseted jacket attire from Head of State. Cream yellow in colour, the jacket included a scooped neckline with the front of the corset fastened with five hooks and the hem curved on the sides to create a longer front. The shoulders are given structure through padding whilst the sleeves are outlined through the ruffled white cuffs. The ruffled collar on the shirt delivers the theme very well as the trousers, which feature small cut-outs on the leg, enhance the modern design of this attire.

Wearing Dior to the Met Gala was actor Thomas Doherty, who wore a light blue/grey tailcoat ensemble with a contrasting beige waistcoat and white shirt. Focusing on the tailcoat, this was a double-breasted cut with six contrasting buttons to match the colour of his contrasting peak lapels. The same darker shade was included on the side stripes of his evening trousers, finished with a subtle centre crease and front pockets. The angled hem of the tailcoat is positioned just below the notched waistcoat hem, this itself fastened with four buttons and designed with a smooth lapel. The chosen accessory was a white bow tie worn around the traditional high neck collar, helping to maintain a touch of historical dress.

Stromae

On the red carpet, singer/songwriter Stromae sported blue as he wore a suave Mosaert check number for the event. Fastened with a three-button front, the cut of the suit was quite classic but thrown in with a modern design element thanks to the shoulder cape feature. The notch lapels were positioned over the cape and flat against it, making sure this tailoring detail wasn't hidden. Two thin double jet pockets sat level with the bottom button whilst his trousers were made with a centre crease and break in the hem. What added that element of gilded glamour was the light blue floral embroidery on the edges of the cape, designed with perfect symmetry and given a silver finish, as enhanced through his collar jewel.

Stormzy

Rapper Stormzy rocked up in a show-stopping all white ensemble from Burberry, featuring a three-piece evening tuxedo underneath a floor-length cape. The suit jacket was a two-button design in a single-breasted cut, finished with satin white peak lapels and a smooth curved edge down to the centre front. A flapped pocket was included either side with a welt pocket on the chest as the shoulders were rounded for extra refinement. The sleeves were designed with four-button cuffs and the waistcoat as cut with a high line on the neck. The white tie sat perfectly tucked behind it, just as perfect as the drape of the cape over the shoulders, styled with the lapels over this item on the red carpet for that definitive look.

Sporting a sharp KENZO blue attire on the red carpet, rapper Kid Cudi's look also included a dramatic long cape, designed with a standard collar, fabric buttons and fastened across the neck with a gold chain. Underneath this item was an accompanying blue two-piece suit with a short jacket fastened with a single button. When the cape is removed, a glossy blue panel is revealed, covering the shoulders and collar of the garment. A medallion is attached to the welt pocket whilst two single jet pockets sit on the diagonal on the front. The trousers are a straight cut with a centre crease and splits at the hem, these details revealed when the cape is also opened to showcase this gorgeous blue poppy print lining. With the ruffled shirt cuffs also on show, the outfit is complete with a black bow tie.

Shawn Mendes

Singer/songwriter looked dapper at this year's Met Gala, wearing a Tommy Hilfiger overcoat and navy blue suit underneath. The coat itself was very much a talking point thanks to the contrasting burgundy wide notch lapel and collar, popped for extra style. Tall single jet pockets featured either side of this double-breasted coat, complete with gold buttons on the front that would pair nicely with the gold lining and gold button on the jacket fastening. Extra burgundy details were included through the contrasting coat sleeve and edging down the centre front. The suit jacket was fastened across like a double-breasted piece, two flapped pockets sitting on the front and the lapels and collar popped once more to continue this strong, tailored look.

Marcus Samuelsson

Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson's Met Gala attire was bold and vibrant as he sported a double-breasted hot pink suit. The jacket was of a six-button design as the buttons, double-jet pockets and peak lapels were all contrasting in black for a sharp detail. Black buttons also featured on the cuffs and would link very nicely to his luxurious black coat draped over his shoulders, the gold embroidered design acting as an outline to the suit itself. The trousers are slim and slightly tapered at the hem with a subtle centre crease, his shirt a crisp white as the collar is styled with a black and white bow tie.
